He’s back. Is he really as enormous as he seems? He towers over the sparrows, seemly a peer to the pigeons. An equally plump cardinal joined the fray today as well. Huddled against the crazy seven degree temperatures, they frantically peck throughout the day against the massive snowfall predicted for tonight.

Thick, soft, overnight snow,

Probably not as much as it looks,

So light,

It’s piled up like cotton Christmas snow.

The fattest robin I’ve ever seen,

Plumps down into the drift,

Joining cardinals, sparrows, and finches,

To peck at fresh-tossed seed.

Sunshine and shocking cold. Looks beautiful from the door, but chased me quickly back inside with negative wind chills

There is a very loud cheeping behind me as I carry out the recycling and stop to enjoy to early morning glow of a new dusting of snow. The cardinal is not pleased that I’m in his space, and definitely not pleased that his food is frozen into the boards.

Fresh morning glaze,

Horrified birds,

Calling for their refill

I waited all day for the snow.

I’m teaching the weather unit right now. We spent the week tracking fronts and watching forecasts, as snow barreled across the northeast.

Even though I tried to temper expectations, with stories of the 13 inches that never happened several years ago, I know at least one was dusting off his sled in excitement.

It held off most of the day, as I pondered my lost credibility.

It seemed rather half-hearted when it did finally start.

It was steady, though, and eventually made a nice coating over the deck.

Pretty, but probably to light, to satisfy the sled brigade.

Sunshine and shadows,

Almost shocking in their sharp definition.

It seems so long since there was sunlight strong enough to cast a shadow.

Nearly five o’clock, it’s still well above the horizon,

Easing through the winter days
