Drizzly cold,
Not quite snow,
Huddled wildlife,
At the all day buffet,
exploring my world, one park at a time

Drizzly cold,
Not quite snow,
Huddled wildlife,
At the all day buffet,

Sunset never came
Dusk inflated beneath the clouds
In the glow of the light
Leaking from the neighborhood kitchens

They don’t even care anymore.
Normally, I have to creep slowly up to the glass to capture pictures of the wildlife. They scatter as soon as I walk outside.
Most still do, but this little squirrel, his buddy, and a couple of pigeons completely ignore me today.
It’s cold, with an icy stillness in the air. Maybe they think there’s about to be a storm and they’d better grab all they can while they can.
Maybe they’re so used to me, I’m no longer seen as a threat.
Maybe they’re just so overstuffed they couldn’t waddle off if they wanted to.

Sunrise,
Watercolor swaths across the horizon,
Edging earlier day by day

Afternoon feeding
Almost sunny
Almost warm
A flurry of squirrels and sparrows and a single finch
Bickering over the scattered seed

Clouds rolled in
Thick and low
A cotton blanket
Pulled closed
Against the winter night

Breezy cold sunset
One lonely squirrel poking through the scattered seed
Abandoned by the departing birds

Clear skies,
Azure blue,
Tumbling into a brilliant golden red,

I’m not sure if he’s brave or too young to know he should be afraid. The rest of the deck life scattered when I slid back the screen and snuck out to the swing.
He froze temporarily, then scooted around the beams, and trotted casually across the rail.
It’s cold and breezy and spitting snow. He knew he could outlast me and revel in the feast before the others darted back.

Frosty sunrise,
Already dissolving the remains of the snow
A scramble of squirrels and birds
Insulted by their disrupted breakfast
Glare from the outer beams
