Frosty, misty, morning,

First day back to work,

Muffled traffic,

Even the birds and squirrels,

Huddled silent against the cold

Dinner and a Show

She’s endlessly fascinated and frustrated by them, the scramble of squirrels and birds taunting her as they battle for the best of the treats.

Mostly, they ignore her, which is probably even more insulting. She crouches and grumbles and lunges. She paws helplessly at the glass, then darts to the other end of the window for another angle.

Only the tiny one, a young squirrel not yet old enough to understand the barrier of the glass, is satisfactorily startled by her determined attacks.

Snow? Maybe… probably not. We got a little yesterday. It came down in huge beautiful flakes for awhile, but then dissolved before it hit the ground. It’s plenty cold enough to have frozen along the branches of the tallest trees. More likely though, it’s just starkly white branches melding with the cold in a wintery mirage.

Fireworks at midnight lit up the neighborhood to close out the worldwide whiplash of 2020.

A silent morning meets the new year with a delicate glaze of ice.
