They all scatter when I walk outside. A few still minutes on the swing is usually all it takes to bring them creeping back. They poke through the slats, and flit back when they realized I’m still there. Eventually, a few decide the snack is worth the risk and straggle back.

I started this wanting to watch the seasons change, to be really aware of when spring finally came in.

Somehow, it still just magically, suddenly appeared. Everything is in bloom, the trees are green, and the grass is scraggly within days of being cut.

It’s here, it’s mid-April, it’s still a little cool most days, and I can’t mark a day when it stopped being winter bare.

Sunshine cool and brilliant,

Slanting through the rafters,

Hosting a tease of birds

Over night drizzle,

Brightening fresh new leaves,

Towering over the beams

Sunday afternoon “work”

Computer on the table,

Opened to this week’s assignments

Ignored for novel, and swing, and birdwatching

Drizzly, lazy, Saturday morning,

Weekend diminished traffic rumble,

Muffled by the irritated chatter,

Of the deck crew protesting,

Their delayed morning feeding

As the world bursts into brilliance,

Of pink and purple and green,

The healthiest growth on the deck,

Is the onions in the composite bin

Misty cool morning,

Lightly stirring,

Shaking off a night of storms

Tiny green leaves,

Finally budding ,

On the last backyard vestige of winter
